If you would have told me at the beginning of this year that two of my best friends in this biz would be the husband and wife techno/dubstep duo Signal Deluxe I’d have laughed and shook my head in disbelief. Based in Mexico City, I’ve never worked with such sincere and devoted artists in my life. I am consistently impressed with their own releases, the releases they put out on their label Blaq (which they run in conjunction with their friend Soundspace, another prominent North American artist), not to mention the new dubstep/electronica band Guajira they are in. But it’s the couple’s vast knowledge of music and indefatigable optimism that has really cemented our bond and their mix for The CONDUIT is an excellent showcase of Signal Deluxe’s funkier side. Hopefully we can have them back in the Spring after their debut album drops on Ombligo to show off some of their amazing dubstep cuts as well. - Sean-Michael Yoder

New York City producer Derek Marin is one of those guys who’s prolifically productive. The guy churns out quality tracks and remixes by the truckload and amazingly they are all super high quality, never derivative. He’s already got releases out on labels like Thoughtless Music, Dialtone, and Subtrak with more to come on Blaq and Nude Photo Music. Marin says it’s time to get the hell out of New York, currently he’s looking for DJ gigs in North America and Europe. - Sean-Michael Yoder
// Bio //
Derek Marin, American House and Electro music producer/DJ, was born Derek Richard Maringelli in Manhattan, New York in 1974. Marin won Mixer Magazine’s “Best New DJ” award in 2001. From 1994, when Marin was recognized as a top DJ/Producer in New York’s electronic community, Marin’s outstanding creative style in remixing gained him releases on many respected underground electronic labels around the world. Marin’s production talents are apparent on releases by electronic artists such as Depeche Mode, Daft Punk and Junior Boys. [1] In 2001, Marin established his own imprint, Faucet Music, with sub labels Modest Music and Sideviewer Records. He is best known for his productions on the Tech House labels Plastic City, Intrinsic Design, and Matterform, as well as his unofficial remixes of Daft Punk and Depeche Mode & his productions under the alias Sideview
Childhood and Early Years
Marin was born into a musical household. His father, Paul Joseph Maringelli, influenced and nurtured Derek’s natural talent and passion for music from an early age. Maringelli senior is a Jazz and Rockabilly drummer, known for his work with the Bix Beiderbecke Sunnyside Memorial Jazz Orchestra. [2] Derek began playing drums at age nine and by the age of fourteen, he was playing in bands. He names his musical influences as New Order, The Smiths, and Depeche Mode. His first band, What She Said, was named from the Smiths song. Derek attended Art & Design High School, graduating in 1992. Summers he attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts, made famous in the film, Fame. Throughout his high school years, Marin performed with various bands in Battle of the Bands venues and in the east village.
1991 – 2001
The Techno rage that took New York City in 1991 inspired Marin to step out from backgrounds and back-ups and create his own style and his own music. He honed his production skills, recording, mixing and editing in studio. By 1992, Marin was producing tracks and selling mix tapes. Beginning in 1994, Marin worked house/electro events in Soho, and in ’96 was a coordinator of Warp Records release party for Blech 2, a compilation CD, featuring live performances by Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Jimi Tenor. With friend Daniel Andre, Marin established Housewerk in 1997, performing weekly House events in various clubs throughout the city. Also in ’97, he began working at Throb, a record store at the epicenter of the New York City dance/club culture and headquarters for the Electroclash Movement.[3] Throb created their own record label, Throb Disk, and one of their releases was Marin with friend Carter Reece under the name Clock Punchers. Marin worked there until 2003. The store has since closed. [4]
2002- Present
In 2002, Marin as Sideview produced his first semi-unofficial release, Wanna Be, on A Touch of Class record label. [5]The release featured a vocal from fashion designer Jeremy Scott.[6] The release was later removed from shelves under a cease order from Scott’s lawyers. The cover featured a naked Scott in full Native American headdress and this photo was stolen from an I-D magazine photo shot. During the next five years, Marin had over twenty releases produced by various record companies. [See discography]
In 2008, Marin’s second and third semi-unofficial releases were produced: Depeche Mode, Modemix DJ Mix and Daft Punk, Leftovers, Remix Album. Modemix, [7] Marin’s favorite Depeche Mode compilation, was released with the consent of Andrew Fletcher of Depeche Mode, then later pulled by former group member Alan Wilder’s lawyers because of a conflict with Marin’s later release, Recoil Remixes. Although Marin did all the remixes on Daft Punk, Leftovers, he was not involved in the release of the album, which was scheduled for release in December 2008 with the supposed consent of Daft Punk. Amid controversy, the album is available on selected sites. [8]
My Better Half, the Twilight Album, was produced by Marin’s Modest Music in 2008, a Indie/Electro pop band he created to do more song-structured music. The album features guitar work from Tim M. of the band Trace-On. The album is an homage to the Twilight book series. [9]
Marin’s 2009 release, Bright Lights, Dark Room, was heralded as “one of this summer’s most exciting releases,” by MBeat, who described Derek as “ . . . a major contributor to the sounds’ progression and a scholar of its’ roots sine the age of fourteen.” [10].
Derek has recently completed the production of a live CD of the Sunnyside Memorial Jazz Orchestra’s annual Bix Beiderbecke memorial concert, which is available on Amazon.
Chris Fortier has done so much for so many artists here in North America – from bringing Sasha & Digweed to New York City’s elite club Twilo during the late Nineties to introducing the next generation of American artists including Coalition of the Killing, Android Cartel, and Signal Deluxe via his Fade imprint. He was the one who strongly suggested that I start VinylJunkie PR and he continues to be a strong ally, a wealth of information, and a good friend. The mix he gave us comes from the last half of a five hour set at his favorite club in the world, The Loft in Barcelona. We feel honored to present such a special nugget from the Fortier collection. - Sean-Michael Yoder

While many people may claim to know Chris’ sound, with their focus on labeling him one thing or another, Chris is equally as focused on his efforts to push back the musical boundaries. It is testament to the man that he continues to develop his sound and musical direction, after all, as the man says himself “I just like to play good underground music, I don’t limit myself. I am growing musically everyday, and the music I create and play reflects that”
It is artists such as Chris Fortier who are inextricably linked to the underground dance music scene that are the genuinely pushing the sound forward. Chris’ determination to continue to push the envelope can be seen in all aspects of his career. Proof of this can be found on his now classic triple CD compilation Balance and his recent solo productions including his stellar debut artist album As Long As The Moment Exits.
The Balance 007 CD was a integral part of the now worldwide successful Balance series and brand. The album was a musical forecast of the fresh and exciting underground movement as we know it today. It is little wonder the CD was name checked for compilation of the year by numerous international magazines and websites. Taking his production a step further in 2007, his debut artist album was released to countless plaudits and impeccable praise. Followed by the remix version of the album saw Chris work along side the likes of Joel Mull, Ed Davenport, Mark Broom, Someone Else, Bruno Pronsato, Pheek and Maetrik.
Under his 40oz production guise Chris has released the several EPs and remixes that musically spreads comfortably across labels such as Bedrock, Wave Music, Cocoon, Kompakt or Get Physical. Recent remixes of Jim Rivers, Pfirter, Alexi Delano, Adultnapper, Derek Marin, Alland Byallo and John Selway, show Chris’ genre defying sound at it’s underground best. Not satisfied with status quo, Chris looks for the boundaries to continue to be pressed and pushed with each coming musical excursion
Chris has been a consistent figure on the world tour circuit with a professional DJ career spanning 19 plus years. He has continually been a crowd favorite, confirmed by his very first residency at the legendary “Aahz” in Orlando through to residencies at The Cross in London and at Twilo in his adopted home of New York. Behind numerous singles, remixes, artist albums and no less than 9 commercially released mix albums, you can catch him as easily in Tokyo as in Buenos Aires and all points in between on any given weekend.
To those that know Fortier’s history, they know to expect plenty more to come, for those that are just getting initiated, Welcome!
Showcasing the incredible releases on Mexico based tech-house/techno label Dialtone Records, Episode 003 features an exclusive mix by Funk Shuei (Christian Orlo & Alexis O.L) and Bioniq (Luis Siller and Alex Galvan).
Dialtone is one of those numerous great labels bubbling up in Mexico, dance music’s new hotbed of creativity. Many of the labels are from Mexico City, but Dialtone’s founders Alexis and Christian are from Cancun in the East (and on the beach). I think for that reason the label’s music is quite different - less dark and more dancable. The label roster is led by the Dialtone bosses under the alias Funk Shuei, for this mix they teamed up with Monterrey’s prolific producer Alex Galvan aka Bioniq for a Dialtone label retrospective to give listeners a full picture of what’s going on down south. - Sean-Michael Yoder
I met Jubilee via a release he did earlier this year for Hidden Recordings called “Dopamine” which has a wicked remix by Noah Pred. Jubilee is launching his own label very soon called Motorcade Music. He hails from Washington DC and is associated with the Mnmlife crew and has regular residencies in DC as well as New York City. He made this mix for another publication but it never aired so it’s been sitting on my wife’s iPod for months. She mentioned to me one day how good it was and that had a nice East Coast flavor that we don’t get out here in Cali. The lightbulb went on and – voila! – the second installment of The Conduit. - Sean-Michael Yoder

Born in Casa Blanca, Morocco, Jubilee grew up listening to his father play instruments and old records. Ten years ago, Jubilee came to the U.S.A., bringing his culturally infused sense of rhythm, beats, and sounds to the streets of DC as a club promoter for Panorama. His interest in becoming a Dj started when he would watch the Djs play for 6 hours a crack, just watching every movement, learning. In 2001, Dj Alex Kelly was playing at DC’s former club, Spot.( one of Panorama’s weekly events ) Jubilee was watching him play until the Dj handed the headphones over . Stunned and feeling like a day-dream, Jubilee put on the headphones and started mixing. Daylight couldn’t come faster. As soon as he could, Jubilee went out and bought about ten records and asked Alex if i could open for him till he got to the club. Shortly after , he bought his first turntable set . Everyday, Jubilee would just play the records over and over and over again. Listening. Feeling the sound and making it work. Jubilee has been creating impressionable sounds over the past 2 years, gearing toward becoming one of the music up and coming artists. Between his live performances and unique DJ sets, Jubilee has created quite a following in DC, earning credibility with some of the industry’s top venues. Support has been a phenomenal instrument is generating Jubilee’s success. With pal Gabriel Rojas, and residency with Mnmlife Jubilee has put together events at venues Napoleon and Red Lounge premiering local and global talents and played with artist such as Josh Wink , Adultnapper , MR.C , Matthias Tanzmann… The more you follow, you’ll see it’s more than just music.
For episode 001 , we’re getting things started off right with an incredible mix by two producers and djs from Los Angeles, Reagan Denius and Christopher Mohn (aka Android Cartel).
I first caught wind of Android Cartel via Chris Fortier after their debut single dropped on his Fade imprint circa 2007. He was keen on them and I loved the release. I stalked them relentlessly for about a year and finally caught up with them for an interview in Big Shot Magazine. Reagan and Chris are great guys and we’ve remained friends ever since. During that time, I have been consistently blown away by the volume of their work (they’ve done releases for Steve Lawler, Louis Osbourne, and Quivver’s labels already not to mention the ones for their own newly launched label, Sketchbook) but also the quality. They’ve finally answered the age-old question, is there still life in progressive house post-Sasha & Digweed? It is a resounding “YES!” and this exclusive mix goes a long way to proving it with rich melodies, subtle shifts in energy, and a dark, techy edge lurking just beneath the surface. Late nights were made for this. - Sean-Michael Yoder
