What was initially supposed to be an annual report mix has turned into a collection of tracks reflecting the not-so-static nature of our winter weather around here. Some days it has been warm and sunny with record high temperatures while other days have brought us record snowfall. With that in mind, we bring the local flavor for the 66th installment of this series.- Sean-Michael Yoder

ill76 brings his tough Texas techno sound for the 55th installment of our series. He’s been around for as long as anyone can remember and even worked with Maetrik as a production partner at one point in his lengthy career. Here he rips through a crate of old and new vinyl for a warm, rich mix that is comprised of many moods. This mix also represents the best our series has to offer – a nuanced journey through new and old sounds presented with both enthusiasm and clinical precision – and we’re quite pleased to present it. - Sean-Michael Yoder

Andres hails originally from Ecuador but bounces around the world as a professional skateboarder and vagabundo. We love this guy, and we think his label (Anusual) and his music or something special. There are obvious Crosstown Rebels references but as run through a South American blender of rhythms and attitude. We like that Caballero’s music is hard to define – is it nu disco, house, electro? - and we also like that it is the funkiest sound out there right now. Caballero is definitely an artist to watch right now. - Sean-Michael Yoder
// Bio //
Andres Caballero was born in Guayaquil Ecuador in 1979 from a Spanish father and an Ecuadorian mother, since young he was introduced into music through his siblings. At the young age of 6 started taking piano lessons for 3 years.In the age of 12 started realizing, he has singing skills, took lessons and learned to play the guitar and drums. He soon added a sampler and turntable to his equipment and started exploring electronic music. At the same time his brother was producing electronic music, mainly influenced by Depeche Mode and Techno Pop of the 80ís. At the age of 16 he started experimenting in electronic music with his brother and Jose Elias Wated, one of the main influences in the ecuadorian electronic scene; he started learning how to scratch and to mix. By the age of 20 he had the skills to use his brotherís equipment and got together with Alessis Doppler to create a small Project called BBD where he started experimenting with the minimoog in a more focused scale.. From there he also focussed on skateboarding, which came up to ESPN coverage. He moved to Europe, to deepen his connections in the electronic scene and advance his production skills. He went into the studio with Ronald Christoph (Berlin,Germany) and things started to get serious and realizing that there is a path in electronic music for him. Since that day he is working hard on his career. Developing music and experimenting with mixing he catapulted himself to play live without having that much of live experience, therefore developed his own unique style and sound. He took matters in his own hand . Living in Barcelona, Spain now, he founded Anusual Media (Corporate Web/Graphic Design & Visual/Video Production) and Anusual Records to give a platform to talented Artists he has met, and to use his experience and contacts he gathered over the years. This has generated gigs for him in D.f. -Mexico, Graz – Austria, Hotel ME Barcelona and so on. His first E.P. sold on platforms like itunes, Juno, etc. made the music saga get serious, playing from house in all its range, to other sides of electronic music and unlimited on posibilities of story.
It’s been a pleasure connecting with PointBender and the Harmonious Discord crew out of Texas this year, thanks to our friend David Collado at Musical Missionary. Not only is HD a solid mix of leftfield sounds that we really dig but we find ourselves sharing many ideas in common as well. When PointBender approached us about doing a mix with Molecule we were intrigued, we loved his track from earlier this year “Return The Lion”. Turns out Molecule is also a member of the band Ishi, a very significant name here in the 530 area code. We spent some time chatting about that over email and then got a stellar mix of sounds from him that simply defies logic. There is something in the water down there in the Rio Grande because this mix isn’t like any of the others in The CONDUIT series. - Sean-Michael Yoder

“It’s all techno to me” is a phrase that can often be heard when Harmonious Discord recording artist Brad Dale is asked about the current state of electronic music. Born in Memphis, educated in jazz and ethnomusicology at the University of North Texas, Brad spent his “woodshedding” years playing in everything from Dub bands, hiphop groups, funk orchestras to more experimental outfits; always searching for new ways of sonic expression. Currently, Brad is a professional sound designer/composer at his resident studio in Dallas, Texas (www.dallasaudiopost.com) and keeps busy on projects in major films, commercials, video games, handheld electronic toys and pretty much anything that makes noise. Along with his electronic releases under Molecule, Brad currently produces the indie acclaimed folk-electronic band Ishi. As if this wasn’t enough to keep this full time sonic mangler busy he also has a highly anticipated project called “Echo Conscious” being released later this year that showcases his dub techno roots. With all these avenues of expression one thing will most certainly remain consistent and that is a drive to push the boundaries and blur the lines.
We remember the day when Dennis used to be based out our way in Sacramento and ran a cool indie dance zine called Selekta. These days he lives in Philly and runs a great house music label called Selekta Recordings. The imprint is consistent with a mix of organic sounds that reminds us a ton of the old Guidance – with a nice selection of various house and downtempo styles. Dennis is also an active remixer and producer and keeps himself busy between that and his DJ’ing gigs. We asked Dennis to contribute a mix because he is also a big supporter of the North American dance music scene and wanted him to share his tastes with peeps in his old stomping grounds. - Sean-Michael Yoder
// Bio //
Dj Dennis has been involved in the electronic music industry for almost 20 years. Since 1992, he’s played an active role in the forward progression of House Music. In his past, he’s shown dedication in each role; being a promoter, event co-ordinator and consultant, music journalist, dance web-magazine editor, hype sheet writer, music reviewer, Dj, producer, and currently, label owner.
Originally from Northern California, Dj Dennis absorbed the west coast vibe of House at its peak in the late 90′s, and in the early part of 2002, brought that vibe to Philadelphia. He was pleasently invited to play at some of Philadelphia’s intimate and growing House and Downtempo nights.
Later in 2006, his internship with Philly’s Worship Recordings, and all the blissful knowledge shared with him from label’s crew, led him to start his own label, Selekta Recordings.
Since 2007, Dj Dennis has helped put out over 50 releases via Selekta, showcasing welcoming sounds of up and coming local and international producers. Whether its House, Techno, Breaks, Downtempo, Funk or Soul, Selekta will introduce to you a new and fresh sound to enjoy.
A Spaniard living in Bristol, Ignacio is a gifted journalist plying his words for Mixside, one of Spain’s most important electronic music magazines. We’ve had many great conversations back and forth about music and art, finding much common ground. But it is the DJ mixes he comes out with – melodic, rich, and loaded with unreleased gems that really caught out attention. His selections reflect that of Bristol’s thriving music scene with an intelligent refinement that has us constantly pushing the pause button to scan his track selection in a feeble bout of trainspotting – usually to find out it’s some exclusive secret weapon. Ignacio’s level of consistancy and knowledge led us to finally invite him to make a mix for The CONDUIT podcast series. - Sean-Michael Yoder

I was born in Lugo, a little city of Galicia, Northwest of Spain, in 1984. In love with music since I was very young, I learned to play guitar by myself when I was a teenager. Music has always been my great passion and my early influences go from Depeche Mode to Guns’N’Roses, from Pink Floyd to Mike Oldfield. When I was 16 I was introduced to electronic music by some of my friends and, since then, I had had a deep and long relationship with it. I started DJing in 2005 at some well-known clubs in Spain as Superclub, Global Club, Reno, Bleep, festival such as Entroido Quente, some raves and private parties. I also developed my passion for writing in Mixside.com, one of the most important Spanish websites about electronic music. In August 2008, one of my sets was selected as a podcast for the label Turbo Recordings, which encouraged me to go on mixing. In September 2009, I moved to Bristol (UK) to continue growing as a dj, journalist and also give my first steps in the field of music production and promotion… Since my arrival in the UK I have collaborated with radio-shows as Tech Republic (Hub Radio) and DJing at Headrush Nights as a periodic resident. I have had the pleasure to share booth with great DJs and producers such as Max Cooper, Perc, Tom DeMac, Sebastien Leger or Samuel L. Session. My electronic music influences ranged from early disco music, Chicago House, Acid House, Detroit Techno to the latest Europen electronic music trends.
Briski does the Re:Body parties in San Francisco along with Nolan Haener and is really bringing the mid-tempo, disco influenced sound back to the SF underground – right where it belongs. These guys even had Art Department out our way long before the album blew up and the duo became ART DEPARTMENT and that’s what put Briski on our radar. This guy represents the kind of laidback, low key, in-the-know kinda musical vibe that we’ve come to love and respect in our fellow Northern Californians and here he offers us a sweet, funky mix to kick the summer off in fine style. - Sean-Michael Yoder

Briski is that short tan kid you’ve seen around your town cutting a rug, djing parties, and promoting undergrounds. Whether it be in Leeds/London England , Dallas Texas, Miami Florida, or San Francisco, he strives to inspire and be inspired by the surrounding underground music scene. He has since reconnected to his original roots in San Francisco, where he now resides and involves himself in the same activities, now at new levels. With his nu classic taste in House/Techno/Disco, he has been a resident within Rythmatik; an ongoing House party thrown in SF, Miami and Seattle, and has moved on to his new creation Re:body, a SF based underground extravaganza. He also threw an eclectic b-side warehouse party called VHS(with guest Paul T) but nowadays has mainly been involved in the new project, Re:body(with last guests being Linkwood & Art Department). The energy and fresh vibe he brings to the turntables has brought him in front of crowds at numerous parties in Dallas( playing with the Cosmic Cocks, Maetrik, Egyptian Lover and Doc Martin), the Bay Area(playing with the Djs like Jeno, Sammy D, Conor, Solar) and at more undergrounds soon to be coming. He would agree that “hype is whatever”, so just let the vibe speak for itself.
Pointbender is new to us, although he’s been around for sometime as part of the combo Grey. Introduced to us by David Collado of Musical Missionary, the Austin based producer makes some of the most amazing tracks we’ve heard in some time. He’s got quite a techy background and it shows in his productions. In addition, he runs the on-point Harmonious Discord label and a bi-monthly internet radio sjow called Discordian Dreaming. We’re excited that he took the time to drop an exclusive mix for The CONDUIT series. - Sean-Michael Yoder

Along the outliers of unexplored cerebral boundaries resides the sonic offerings of Grey Music member and Harmonious Discord label front man Sean Anderson aka PointBender. A project focused on thought bending synthetic manipulations and heady melody construction, the PointBender moniker provided Sean an avenue to explore a highly creative fusion of song creation and live performance. After many successful live performances the pieces began to gain a momentum of their own and were later released as projects on labels like Thoughtless, Musical Missionary, and Harmonious Discord.
Before the PointBender project began Sean was half of a production duo with a notable ten year catalog of releases. Grey (later re-named Grey Music Project) first appeared on record shelves in 2001 with their debut release on Chicago based music staple Guidance. The quick submersion of the two into the EDM spotlight paved the path for a discography of back-pocket selections on labels like Fair Park, Blunted Funk, Nightshade, and many on their own imprint.
A move to Austin Texas meant the two would produce less music together and more via their solo avenues. Shortly after the PointBender project premiered it showcased a noticeable abstraction from the earlier Grey material. The solo endeavor was messier at times, stranger a majority of the time, and indisputably compelling all the time. This crayon squiggle all over the audible construction paper was embodied by the first full length featured on Harmonious Discord called “Sifting through Circuits”. Despite his concentrated efforts to become rich and famous and completely sell out Sean will most likely continue to deliver norm shattering niche releases on some of the industries silent monsters.
As a DJ, Sean has been a presence in the Texas Electronic Music scene for over 14 years. He has played a vast list of venues from festivals to dive bars all over the US and select cities in Europe and Canada. For a 12 year catalog of mixes simply visit his archive at http://www.hdrecordings.com/mix-archive.
Sean has also partnered with many companies in the digital music creation sector with handcrafted loops featured on Samplebase’s 4th Floor Sample CD and was part of the development and design of the Open Labs DBeat. Currently Sean is sponsored by Livid Instruments and is a licensed Ableton and Apple Logic Instructor.
